Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST) developed workshops in digital media for young people attending the Upper Mountains Youth Service at Katoomba. They wanted the young people attending the drop in service to be able to make some visual diaries in a safe and supported place.

Emilly Pettit, a MYST Youth Worker trained young people to make short videos so they could document a week in their life as a young person living in the Blue Mountains. Emily taught them skills in camera and web editing during the ‘drop-in’ program, then gave them a camera to take home for the week. You can see two of these visual diaries here. MYST hopes to continue the “Day in the Life of…” series.

The Blue Mountains Women’s Health and Resource Centre (BMWHRC) developed the ‘Celebrate in Colour’ visual arts workshops for young women.

The young women produced individual art works and a large collaborative piece. They painted on canvas using acrylic paint plus some mixed media, with a theme of understanding and expressing who you are as a young woman.

The workshops were run over three Saturdays in August/September and were facilitated by Sarala Porter, Gina Harrowell and Clare Delaney, Art Therapists and Sheridan Blair, Visual Artist.

Amy Beth Hill and Shelley Oliver took the video and photo’s and also edited the visual diary/interviews.

Many thanks to the young women who participated in these workshops and created such amazing art works.

Check out a summary video and lots of pictures of the artwork in progress below!
