Australia Day 037

On Australia Day/Survival Day 2011, we came together for the first time at Circular Quay, Sydney.
We all felt really nervous but once we were on the GenerationOne Ferry with our brothers and sisters and cousins, and we began to meet other participants and the kids who had already done the program, it felt better.
And we won the dance-off on board by busting out moves to Thriller.
Anyway, our ferry won the race and was judged ‘best dressed’.
Our opening workshop ran from 26 – 28 January 2011. It was designed as a long ice-breaker to introduce the participants to one another and to the staff; the participants to the peer supporters; and the parents of the participants to one another and to our staff.

Our families were watching up at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair – too far for us to hear them. They said they were cheering for us.
The involvement of parents, carers and siblings is integral to the success of our program. We aim to work together with parents to continue to expand the possibilities open to all of the children in the family.

We went up to Yabun in Victoria Park – lots of us had never been before. It’s like a big get-together of Aboriginal people in Sydney – it is a big celebration. There was music, and footy, and stalls. But it was SOOOO hot!
The program aims to celebrate and promote pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, identities, histories by giving participants access to a wide range of people, experiences and information.

So we swam at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern – it’s our home in Sydney. We played games. I still can’t remember everyone’s names!
The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) in Redfern is a proud Aboriginal place. It is a place that promotes positivity and excellence. It is a great homebase for our residentials in Sydney.
This extended free time is intended to allow the peer supporters and the participants to get to know one another, and for preferences for peer support relationships to become clearer to the young people and the workers.

The peer supporters went home after dinner and we hung out with our night supervisors.
We use youth workers to provide night supervision so that program staff are rested.
