The Chainmail: Behind the Scenes“:

The Chainmail was created by students from Year 9 photography at James Busby High School in Sydney’s West. After some initial skill-building workshops with CuriousWorks, the group brainstormed ideas for their short fim. A real interest in the horror genre led to the basic idea for The Chainmail , a fun take on a seemingly harmless phenomenon.

After agreeing on the characters and structure of the film, the class broke into groups and wrote separate parts of the film, which were assembled and smoothed out before shooting day. Check out the production stills below:

Digitalogic was an initiative in 2010 by Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre to engage 5 disadvantaged schools in the Liverpool area with digital media workshops. These schools included Lurnea High, Miller Technology High, Liverpool Girls High, Ashcroft High and James Busby High.

CuriousWorks facilitated the workshops with each school group, usually art or photography classes, empowering students to make short films from concept to completion.

The project was concluded by bringing the 5 schools together for a screening of all the created films at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre in April 2011.

Digitalogic was supported by Arts NSW through the ConnectEd initiative.

Corner Interactive

As the sun sets on Thursday 12th May, the St Marys Corner Precinct will be all lights and action. Large outdoor screens will be set up on lawn and will project short films and video art produced by local filmmakers. The films are the result of video storytelling workshops CuriousWorks have been running with residents and students of St Marys. The young people have made films about diversity in their school, they have filmed students from all the different backgrounds greeting the screen in their own language. There is also a very short film referencing the diaspora of the Samoan community in St Marys area. Amongst the films are stories from residents that have grown up along the Great Western Hwy around St Marys for over 50 years. The short film tells the history of the Great Western Highway, and the stories connected to it. There will also be a showcase of video art inspired by the local area projected onto one of the screens.

Residents are invited to pop down from dusk and watch the films or interact with the screen and actually select the stories that want to watch from the local area. The films have been linked to locations on an interactive map of St Marys so residents can link the stories back to actual places in their Neighbourhood. Local residents are being encouraged to bring picnic blankets down to sit on the lawn or mingle with the film makers. Tea, Coffee and warm soup will be available on the night. Parking at the centre is available.

Thursday 12th May, Screening Times 5.30pm-7.30pm
St Marys Corner Precinct, 29 Swanston St St Marys (Corner Great Western Hwy and Mamre Rd) Entry via Collins or Swanston Sts.

“She’s some sort of psychic or something. I don’t even know what that means!” – Derrick

CuriousWorks is proud to present Derrick: Portrait of a Bully , the first of five short films made for the Digitalogic program, a partnership with Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre based in five high schools in Liverpool in 2010. Watch the video, read about the process and learn more about Digitalogic below! Stay tuned for more Digitalogic films in the near future!

Derrick: Behind the Scenes“:

Digitalogic workshops with CuriousWorks began with Year 11 students at Lurnea High School in Term 2 of 2010. The class of 12 students had limited video making experience, so cut their teeth filming and editing their own ball game video ( watch it here! ) while learning some production basics!

Over the following weeks we started the group process of devising a story for the film! All the students had their input into what the story could be about and the most popular idea surfaced; a mockumentary that focused on a school bully. We looked at examples of the mockumentary genre and decided that the film would include interviews and candid footage of the bully at work.

After establishing the overall story and structure as a class group, we began exploring some of the key scenes in the film through theatre games and improvisation. In particular the confrontation between Derrick (Taylor Bell) and Gladys (Michelle Elliott) was worked out by performing the scene repeatedly in front of the class to see what worked and what didn’t.

The class agreed to keep the structure of the film firm but leave the script loose to allow for imrpovisation and spontaneity during production. Half the class developed shot lists and wrote a few key lines, while the other half devised the characters and questions that would be used throughout the film.

On October 21st, the photography class took the whole day off to shoot most of the film! The shoot was led by Director Michelle Elliott and the able combination of Anhar Zaki, Azhar Zaki and Mahanna Zahroon made a formidable camera and sound team. While the two leads had already begun getting comfortable performing, for many of the other students this was their first attempt at acting! Jessica Grover, Paris Pyke, Chris Ratanachanh, Blake Goodman and Azhar Zaki all provided excellent supporting performances!

Derrick: Production Day

Derrick: Production Day

While most of the film was shot that day, the interviews with Mr Curtis (generously played by the Year 11 photography teacher Wade Jenkins) and Derrick were shot later – fitting everything into one day is hard! The final stage of the filmmaking process, post-production, was led by the director Michelle and editor Brett Hanlon.

A big congratulations to Lurnea High Year 11 Photography 2010 on making your first short film such an impressive one! Big thanks to teachers Wade Jenkins and Rakshana Nair for helping make it happen!

In September 2010 the Desert Stories crew embarked on their first professional short film project under the guidance of filmmaker mentor Platon Theodoris. Curtis Taylor speaks about his experience of directing his first narrative based short film, with some sneak peaks of Mamu in between.

The video is made up of interviews with Curtis during the post production phase of Mamu and was filmed on location in Newman and Lake Dora, Punmu Community.
