We almost called this position “The Listener”. The two, of course, go hand in hand.
The Writer has a special relationship with the rest of the CuriousWorkers. She listens to and understands the Director’s vision for the company; the other staff’s interpretations and implementations of it. And she is able to convert this into compelling, inspiring, accessible collections of words.
You will spend half this job writing grants. You will spend a quarter of it writing marketing. You will spend the other quarter writing creatively for this website, for our creative initiatives and other oddities. We are not interested in treating these tasks as separate activities. Your role is to come up with a vision, a tone, a world from the CuriousWorks perspective that sits across all these areas. To evolve our literary status quo.
You understand that grants are a dialogue; a way of bridging the gap and building long-term partnerships between this little independent collective and government, philanthropy and peak funding bodies. You understand that marketing used to be, and still can be, about communication: about talking to the folk who are curious about us, as curious as we are about them. You know our folk are diverse. Diverse of culture, education, geography… and you are geared up for the task of writing that is accessible for them all. You get all excited thinking about a process of writing to carry across our website, our postcards, our blimps… You are flexible with your words and become productive in situations where disciplines meet. It is stimulus for you. You are not frightened of writing for dance, in response to coding, or in collaboration with a remote community for a projection lighting up a school fence in the middle of the desert.
You will not be doing budgets or posting things. The Generals and the Care-Taker will account for that. Instead, you will be thinking, testing and flowering, building on your previous experience in writing grants, marketing and your own creative practice.
Annual salary is $52,000 (including salary sacrifice benefits for charities) plus 9% super. The job starts in January 2010. Your salary goes up every year if you do well, since, well, you are writing the grant applications.
Expressions of interest, including your CV, should be sent to job@curiousworks.com.au by 9 November 2009.
PS: The Writer can, of course, be male or female. They can be an alien or animal, for that matter. As long as they can write. They could be part-time or full-time. Let us know what you prefer.
PPS: Not the writerly type? Check out The General and The Educator.
