The ReGenerating Community Conference was held September 2-4, 2009, at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. This video is a mashup of snippets from the first two days of the conference that was shown on the afternoon of the third day of the conference.

The ReGenerating Community Conference addressed ways in which global issues are being addressed locally through collaborations between artists, communities and local government. Issues of community identity in an environment of globalised culture; issues of energy production in the context of climate change; issues of indigenous sovereignty on leasehold land; issues of country becoming city and changing identity; issues of aging; issues of schooling; issues of imaging futures, issues of having a future…

This video is the trailer for CuriousWorks’ first feature, This City is a Body: The Migrant Project Film. We’ll be premiering the film at our warehouse Friday, 13th November. Check out the details here!

It’s a mashup of two CuriousWorks projects: video excerpts from our ‘This City is a Body’ conference in 2007 and a song by our audiovisual collective, Asi, called ‘Sold’.

I was inspired by the opportunity to take excerpts from two amazing speeches at this conference – by Dr Richard Greenthun and Dr Ross Gibson – and give the ideas within them a more mainstream appeal by putting them to a beat.

The conference was held as part of The Migrant Project, CuriousWorks’ first initiative, which brought together 50 Sydneysiders with cultural and artistic ancestries from across the planet to develop cross-platform projects about Sydney as a city built on a history of migration.

Says Talula Rose, a UNSW Media student who made this video in a partnership between UNSW and CuriousWorks:

Indigenous Hip-Hop artist Wire MC and his partner in lyrics Choo-Choo, fight for aboriginal rights and social awareness / change through their beats. Here they speak about the power of the word and describe hip-hop as a template for political speaking. Cuzco believes that the force behind this art-form is ideal for self-expression and for changing peoples mentalities by attacking their brains. They encourage others to either help a disadvantaged community or fight for what they believe in, and conclude that getting out there in these ways brings feelings of peace and fulfillment.

This video was made by Talula Rose toward completion of requirements for a BA majoring in Media in the school of English Media and Performing Arts at the University of New South Wales.
