2008

Hugo Bowne-Anderson

  • Researcher & Writer
  • PHD Student, Pure Mathematics, University of NSW

Hugo was a researcher and writer for CuriousWorks throughout the first half of 2008, trawling the physical world and the internet for information concerning such varied phenomena as issues of social justice, the production of both real and virtual electronic instruments, and the development of open source technologies. He distilled this information into his role as a project producer for a real-time triggering system in CuriousWorks’ April Kinect lab at Casula Powerhouse; and as a writer of various pieces on CuriousWorks which will be published on this website over the last quarter of 2008 and in physical publications in the future.

Hugo’s most recent non-academic pieces have appeared in the Australian, HEAT magazine, and CRACK, a publication released in conjunction with a National Young Writers’ Festival program of the same name. He is also currently completing his PhD in Pure Mathematics at UNSW.

Mark Havryliv

  • Coder and Engineer
  • PhD candidate, Faculty of Informatics, University of Wollongong

Mark was part of April’s Kinect lab at Casula Powerhouse. He developed the code for a real-time, audiovisual triggering system, specifically for use with a small, hand-held infra-red device.

Mark Havryliv is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Wollongong specialising in the design and construction of haptic, force-feedback devices for musical performance; he works with Professors Greg Schiemer and Fazel Naghdy on an ARC Industry Linkage grant.

He has previously attained a Bachelor of Music (Composition) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2004 and a Masters – Research in Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong, creating games to be controlled by musical instruments. During this time Mark was the primary research assistant on the ARC Discovery project ‘The Pocket Gamelan’ with Greg Schiemer, a project that developed software for real-time, multi-user musical performance on mobile phones. Mark is also a co-collaborator with Alon Ilsar on an Australia Council New Instrument Grant, the ‘Air-Drums’, a wireless virtual drumming interface. Mark has presented his research at national and international conferences including New Interfaces for Musical Expression, International Computer Music Conference, Australasian Computer Music Conference, Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval, and the International Conference on Game Research and Development. He was also first runner-up in the ‘Trailblazer’ research contest at UoW for research relating to his Masters thesis.
